Summary

Widely considered one of the great American novels, Herman Melville’s masterpiece went largely unread during his lifetime and was out of print at the time of his death in 1891。 Called the greatest book about the sea ever written by D。H。 Lawrence, Moby Dick features detailed descriptions of whale hunting and whale oil extraction as well as beautiful, incisive writing on race, class, religion, art, and society。 The story, loosely based on a real whaling shipwreck, features the unforgettable, vengeful Captain Ahab, who obsessively hunts a great white whale who bit his leg off below the knee。

I'm affected by this novel。Gist is, curb your madness, accept that you don't understand few things and that's ok。 I see Moby-Dick as an allegory of God。 I'm affected by this novel。Gist is, curb your madness, accept that you don't understand few things and that's ok。 I see Moby-Dick as an allegory of God。 。。。more

One of the most confusing, frustration, boring and annoying books mixed with an amazing adventure。 I think if you just skip all the chapters detailing the ins and outs of whaling life/ parts of a whale/ parts of a ship/ how things work/ Ahab’s crazy rants and philosophies and just read the action part then it would be far more enjoyable!

unfathomably good (ha ha, get it??), words cannot describe how much so, except perhaps the words of the book itself。 much much weirder of a book (calling it a novel is honestly a stretch) than its generally given credit for either, you can totally see why people hated it at the time。 the whale is probably the coolest animal full stop。

I had a complicated relationship with this book。 I went in knowing very little, just the things that we know from media。 I knew that there was Ahab And he wanted to chase a whale named Moby Dick。 I did not expect over 400 pages of wailing information。 I know more about blubber and oil and spermaceti then I ever expected to。 I know more about ships than I expected to。 I didn't hate the book。 But for me the informational chapters on this stuff kind of bored me。 I absolutely loved Ishmael and Queeq I had a complicated relationship with this book。 I went in knowing very little, just the things that we know from media。 I knew that there was Ahab And he wanted to chase a whale named Moby Dick。 I did not expect over 400 pages of wailing information。 I know more about blubber and oil and spermaceti then I ever expected to。 I know more about ships than I expected to。 I didn't hate the book。 But for me the informational chapters on this stuff kind of bored me。 I absolutely loved Ishmael and Queequeg, Ahab, and the other sailors。 Especially Ahab, his lines were poetic and interesting and resonated with me。 For now I'm giving this a three-star rating because of the fact it felt like it took three years to read, But I do plan on rereading this at some point and I think I'll learn to appreciate it more。 But for now, in my journey of reading classic novels, I just expected more。 。。。more

Best book ever? If not at least is a great candidate。

Better appreciated, in my honest opinion, as a feat of the human imagination rather than a giant stroke of literary genius。 The extent to which Herman Melville brings this voyage to life is at times brilliant, but the idiosyncrasy of his prose and dialogue leave a lot to be desired during the more thematically and emotionally significant moments。 His imagining of The Whale itself, and of Ahab, are what makes the book incredible in places but it demands more than it deserves from the reader in th Better appreciated, in my honest opinion, as a feat of the human imagination rather than a giant stroke of literary genius。 The extent to which Herman Melville brings this voyage to life is at times brilliant, but the idiosyncrasy of his prose and dialogue leave a lot to be desired during the more thematically and emotionally significant moments。 His imagining of The Whale itself, and of Ahab, are what makes the book incredible in places but it demands more than it deserves from the reader in the 'present' moments。The ship and its crew are buried in the text a thousand fathoms deep, figuratively and literally。 The harpooneers are illustrated beautifully in the early chapters and then their characters disappear altogether in the later acts。 Tashtego has one last, great moment in the drowning wreckage of the Pequod but the reader is denied closure regarding poor Queequeg and Daggoo。 The dignity with which they are portrayed throughout the novel as civil, complex and proud individuals is denied in their final moments as they are tossed, again figurative and literal, to the sea。 For an author who engages with theatrics as much as Melville, this final climax was a disappointment。Moving on to the rest of the crew, I feel that much of their character was lost on me。 Random players appear in and disappear from the text at will and detract from the characters that we are directed towards。 The carpenter, for instance, has no given name and is of very little importance to the plot。 The coffin he makes for Queequeg binds his fate ultimately to Ishmael, who rides the coffin to the safety of The Rachel, but he offers nothing else to the story or its themes。 Why, then, is he given so many lines of dialogue in the most critical moments?! To which ends?! It baffles me。 SEVERAL PAGES OF SOLILOQUY EVEN。However, in all my grievances (don't even get me started on some of those nonfiction chapters) I cannot deny that Melville had accomplished precisely what he had meant to。 The titular character, the Whale Himself, is masterful。 Our chase with the Whale validates every syllable spent on building him up, every seemingly tedious chapter on the uses of spermaceti, ambergris, the cross-sections of the whale heads, the imagined Whale was raised in every one of these so that, by the time his jaw nigh cleaves Ahab's boat in half on the first day of the chase, the brutal image is fully matured。 I see his greatness and malicious intent exactly as Melville desired of me。The Whale is an astounding feat of imagination。 I only wish it wasn't so tedious at times。 And perhaps the tedium exalted the whale in my mind, as he banishes all tedium left in the novel, but there were too many hours in this book。 。。。more

There were a few chapters that could be cut out and still have the whole story, but it was more entertaining than I expected。

It’s a classic that I didn’t like。 Oh well。 It had some good moments, but it was way too long。 The chapters would go into great details on whaling, whales, ships, etc that didn’t move the plot forward or provide character development, so it was frustrating to say the least。 It could have been a great novella though。

Absolute slog to get through。 First few chapters are absolute poetry 🤌🏻

Read an abridged version。 It was ok。

Okay, so i was just expecting this book to be about a guy that is obsessed with a whale and how he tries to find it。 What I actually found was that this book was more about the human condition, whiteness, power, and the things we throw away when we dig our heels in the ground and remain unmoved in our ways。

A short review。 I enjoyed this book。 What ends up expressed in the futility of the final exercise is everything that I had to drag myself through to get there。 Melville gives all the motivation and, if you take it all at face value, veneration, that you need to place yourself with the characters in the book。 Obviously you can cut the volume in thirds without losing much of the narrative, but then what would be the point。 That's what shark week is for! How did the popular view of this book become “boring whale book” ???!! Moby-Dick has the reputation of being too long and too boring for anyone to read。。。I was literally shocked when I found out it’s just under 600 pages and extremely readable。 This book is incredible, it’s beautiful, funny, moving, and probably one of the most important works of American literature in my opinion。 Definitely worth reading and revisiting in the future。
